Understanding Contact Owners

Understanding Contact Owners

In Propel, contact ownership determines which team member is responsible for managing a specific journalist or media contact. This can help ensure accountability, avoid duplicate outreach, and keep communication organized.

How contact ownership works

  • No default owner
When a new contact is added to Propel, there is no default owner assigned.

  • Automatic ownership based on pitching
If no one manually assigns an owner, Propel automatically assigns ownership to the most recent person who pitched that journalist. This ensures ownership stays aligned with active outreach.

  • Manual assignment
At any time, a team member can manually assign a contact owner. This is useful if you want to transfer responsibility or ensure a specific person manages the relationship, regardless of who pitched most recently.

Example

  • If Sarah pitches journalist John Doe today, she becomes the contact owner.

  • If Alex pitches John Doe next week without a manual change, ownership will automatically switch to Alex.

  • If ownership is manually set to Sarah, it will remain with her until someone pitches to the contact and acquires ownership.

Understanding contact ownership ensures your team has clear visibility on who is responsible for each journalist, preventing overlaps and strengthening media relationships.
